Half of primetime is spent on advertising. Advertising can be defined as a method of communication that is aimed to persuade readers, listeners and viewers to purchase. The desired result is to convince customers. In the recent past, there has been a proliferation of a form of advertising. This is advertising for children. Many businesses are targeting children as their target customer. However, many may feel that this form of advertising is not good and should be banned. Advertising should be banned for children for some reasons: children waste much time watching TV, children don’t have enough ability to buy something, and advertisements include violence that affects children when they grow up.

Children waste too much time watching TV, thus affecting their studies. Children should spend quality time studying and increasing their knowledge. However, the increase of advertising targeting children has led children’s TV programs to air longer which increases the time children spend watching TV. Most of these advertisements are usually eye-catching as well, and children cannot help but watch them. Children are young. They can’t control themselves. For example, an advertisement showing a child consuming a very delicious pizza which enables them to outdo other children during play. Many companies are increasingly placing their advertisements during prime time hours. At this time, children should be doing their homework and studying. However, many children’s priorities have changed.

Children do not have enough ability to buy something. Children don’t have jobs, and they do not have the capabilities to purchase. They usually rely on their parents to shop for them or give them money to purchase what they want. Most of the time, parents are forced to buy items that are not necessary. Many advertisements tend to imply that certain goods or services are completely necessary. Many children put pressure on their parents to buy those products for them. The parents are left with no choice, because they may not want to disappoint their children. As Garey States in his article “Brands R Us” that “we most certainly need to reduce consumption, and are of the first steps me can take towards consuming fewer unnecessary goods is to consume less advertising.”(qtd in Gaetz PP364 - 566)

Advertisements include violence which affects children as they grow up. There are some forms of advertising that are very violent. This may have some negatives effect on children. They may lead children to having aggressive thoughts (Science Daily 1).  For example, in a TV advertisement, a teenager, while driving, realizes that he has forgotten his favorite hamburger at home. He drives the car carelessly. He rushes to get his hamburger. The advertisement may try to depict that the teenager can do anything so as to acquire his favorite hamburger, but in the mind of the child watching the advertisement, it may mean that careless driving. So many advertisements are like this example which has great impact on children’s growth.

In conclusion, advertising for children should be banned. This should include television, radio and outdoor advertising. This form of advertising has had a negative effect on the lives of children. The government should have a role to ban that this form of advertising.
